Colonial residence at Lutyens Delhi

Located at the heart of Lutyens Delhi, this beautiful building projects an image of power, authority, and permanence, with its grand classical façade. Originally designed as a school, the building was renovated and repurposed as a family residence in 2024 by Architect Kshitij Mehra of SAC Designs.

The point cloud scan

For this project we used BLK360 LiDAR scanner and focused primarily on the northern building facade.

BLK scanners are designed for capturing highly accurate 3D spatial data for a wide range of industries, including architecture, construction, engineering, and heritage preservation. The scanner uses laser technology to capture detailed point clouds of environments, creating a precise 3D digital representation of a space in a matter of minutes.

The scanners offer millimeter-level accuracy, capturing approximately 9 million measurement points to create detailed and accurate 3D models of structures, rooms, and landscapes.

The device is lightweight, portable, and can be controlled via a mobile app, which streamlines the process of setting up and scanning sites.

Architectural Analysis

The point cloud is imported in to Revit and  visualized as a 3D model, which can be viewed from various angles and perspectives providing a highly accurate and detailed digital model of a structure.

We created plan and section views to help in better understanding of the scanned environment.

On our analysis, we found out that the building is constructed in classical proportions; with the pedestal (1/5), column (2/5), entablature (1/5) and parapet (1/5) at the upper floor level, but just the columns and entablature at the lower level. We suspect there could be a base buried at the ground floor level, which could be landfilled in an attempt to raise the patio, bringing it closer to the floor level.

Scan to BIM

Scan to BIM (Building Information Modeling) is a process that integrates point cloud data with Building Information Modeling (BIM) software to create accurate digital representations of existing buildings or structures.

This approach is particularly useful for documenting as-built conditions, performing renovations, or carrying out detailed analyses of existing infrastructure. The key goal of Scan to BIM is to transform the physical world captured via 3D scanning into a digital model that can be manipulated, analyzed, and optimized within BIM workflows.
